01 / The essentials
Before you join DonutSMP
DonutSMP is a Minecraft multiplayer server. Connecting means adding a server address inside Minecraft—not signing in through a guide website.
DonutSMP’s own joining guide describes Java and Bedrock access. The setup depends on your edition and device, and supported versions can change. Check the server’s current instructions before choosing a game version or entering a Bedrock port.
Before you press Join
- Check your edition. Java and Bedrock use different connection menus.
- Sign in normally. Use the Minecraft launcher or the game’s Microsoft sign-in flow.
- Match a supported version. The newest release is not necessarily supported immediately.
- Read the server rules. Access and permitted modifications are controlled by the server operator.
Paid referral address: donutsmp.us is the address we promote. We earn a percentage of rank purchases made by players referred through it. DonutSMP’s own website publishes donutsmp.net. A referral address is not a promise of access, priority, or rewards.
02 / Your first connection
Joining on Java and Bedrock
Use the instructions that match the game you actually launched. Java and Bedrock are separate editions, even when they are installed on the same computer.
Minecraft: Java Edition
Computer- Open Minecraft using a version currently supported by the server.
- Select Multiplayer, then Add Server.
- Choose a name for your saved entry. In Server Address, enter
donutsmp.us, our paid referral address. - Select Done, choose the saved server, and select Join Server.
Enter the hostname without https://, slashes, or spaces. The server-name field is only a label; putting the address there will not configure the connection. See Minecraft’s Java server instructions for the standard joining flow.
Minecraft: Bedrock Edition
Device dependent- On a supported computer or mobile device, open Play, then Servers, and find Add Server.
- Enter the current Bedrock address and port supplied by DonutSMP. Do not assume the Java referral address or a guessed port will work.
- Save the entry and connect using a supported game version.
Console menus differ and may not offer custom server entries. Use Minecraft’s Bedrock server guidance for your device. This guide does not claim that the referral address supports every platform.
03 / Troubleshooting
Common Minecraft joining errors
Select the message that matches your screen. These are general Minecraft fixes; wording varies by edition, and an error can have more than one cause.
01“Unknown host” or an address that cannot be foundStart with the saved address, then check connectivity.
- Retype the hostname in the address field. Remove leading or trailing spaces, website prefixes, and extra punctuation.
- Compare the entry with the address you intended to use. If a referral address fails, check the server operator’s published connection details.
- Open an ordinary website. If general connectivity also fails, restore your internet connection before troubleshooting Minecraft.
If only that hostname fails, the address or its DNS may need attention from its operator. Reinstalling Minecraft is unlikely to repair a hostname problem.
02“Outdated client,” “outdated server,” or “incompatible version”Your game version and the server’s accepted versions may not match.
Check the version shown in your game or launcher against the server’s current instructions. For Java, select an appropriate stable release in the launcher. Avoid snapshots or previews unless the server explicitly supports them. On Bedrock, review available updates and current server compatibility; a server may need time to support a newly released update.
Do not keep updating at random: the goal is a supported version, not simply the highest version number.
03“Invalid session” or a sign-in/authentication errorThe game may need a fresh account session.
Close Minecraft completely and restart the launcher or app. If the message remains, sign out and back in through the normal Microsoft account flow, then reopen the game. Confirm you are using the account with access to the edition you launched.
If an authentication service is unavailable, wait for service to return. Enter passwords only in the legitimate sign-in flow; this guide does not need your password or verification code.
04“Connection timed out” or repeated disconnectsThe route between your device and the server may be unstable or unavailable.
- Pause large downloads or streams. Move closer to your Wi-Fi router, or test a wired connection if available.
- Check whether you can reach another server. If several fail, investigate your device or network; if only one fails, check that server’s announcements.
- Review whether your firewall or security software is blocking Minecraft. Use an appropriate app permission; keep your protection enabled.
School, work, or other managed networks may restrict game traffic. Ask the network administrator rather than trying to bypass those restrictions. Minecraft provides further network troubleshooting steps.

05“Multiplayer is disabled” or account permission restrictionsAccount settings can prevent multiplayer before the server is reached.
Review the Microsoft/Xbox privacy and online-play settings associated with the account. For a child account, the adult family organizer should review the appropriate permissions. Follow Minecraft’s child-account guidance and your platform’s requirements. Restart the game after any approved changes.
Changing the server address will not override account restrictions.
06Bedrock says “Unable to connect”Check edition-specific details before repeating the join attempt.
Confirm the server currently supports Bedrock and verify its published Bedrock address and port. Recheck Microsoft sign-in, multiplayer permissions, and game-version compatibility. Then test your network using the steps above.
This message is broad: it does not prove that you are banned, that your account is broken, or that reinstalling the game will help. Keep the exact error text when seeking support.
07There is no “Add Server” button on your consoleConsole server menus do not work exactly like computer and mobile menus.
The standard console experience is limited to supported server options rather than offering the same custom-address setup. Check the current instructions for your platform. A missing button is not a spelling error in the IP and is not fixed by entering a different address.
Third-party apps or DNS workarounds are not part of the standard joining steps described here.
08The server is full, restarting, or temporarily unavailableSome connection problems require a server-side change.
Read the full message and check DonutSMP’s announcements through its own channels. Wait and retry when capacity or service is available. Repeatedly reconnecting, changing game files, or reinstalling the launcher cannot create space on a full server.
This guide does not provide live outage status, guaranteed entry, or a queue bypass.
09A ban, access restriction, or rejected client modificationFollow the specific reason shown by the server.
If the message identifies a disallowed mod or client, review the server rules and test a supported, unmodified client where appropriate. If the message says your account is banned or restricted, use the operator’s published appeal or support process.
A referral address does not remove a restriction. Do not use alternate accounts, VPNs, or other addresses to evade enforcement.
04 / If you are still stuck
Where to get help
Record what happened before changing more settings. For server-specific access questions, use the support links available from DonutSMP’s own website. For Microsoft sign-in or Minecraft account problems, use Minecraft Help. Server Guides cannot access your account or change server permissions.
Include the details that narrow it down
- The exact error message and the time it appeared.
- Your device, Java or Bedrock edition, and game version.
- The address and port you entered, if applicable.
- Whether another server connects, and which fixes you already tried.
Remove passwords, verification codes, personal information, and private chat from any screenshot you share.
05 / Quick answers
DonutSMP joining questions
Do I need a Realms subscription to join on Java?
No. Joining a Java multiplayer server does not require a Realms subscription. You do need access to Minecraft: Java Edition and a suitable account. See Minecraft’s Java server guide.
Why does this guide use a different address?
donutsmp.us is our paid referral address. We earn a commission—a percentage of rank purchases—when players we refer purchase ranks. DonutSMP’s own website lists donutsmp.net. The referral address is not presented as the official address or the only way to connect.
Should I reinstall Minecraft first?
Start with the address, supported version, sign-in, and connection checks. Reinstallation is a disruptive step and will not fix server capacity, an access restriction, or a server outage.
Is Server Guides official DonutSMP support?
No. Server Guides is an independently operated, referral-funded guide site. The server operator controls availability, supported versions, gameplay rules, and access decisions. Our commission arrangement does not make this an official support service.
